Living with Neurofibromatosis: My Journey Through IVF with Pre-Genetic Diagnosis
Neurofibromatosis is a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system, causing tumour growth along nerves. Living with this condition can present unique challenges, especially for those who wish to start a family. In this blog post, I will share my personal journey of living with Neurofibromatosis and going through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) with pre-genetic diagnosis.
Understanding Neurofibromatosis
Neurofibromatosis is a genetic condition that can affect various organs in the body. The symptoms can vary greatly from person to person, ranging from mild to severe. The most common symptom is the growth of tumours, known as neurofibromas, on or under the skin. These tumours can cause pain, disfigurement, and other complications.
The Desire to Start a Family
Like many individuals, I had always dreamed of starting a family. However, living with Neurofibromatosis added an extra layer of complexity to that dream and being single. Given the genetic nature of the condition, there was a chance that I could pass it on to my children. This concern led me to explore alternative approaches, such as IVF with pre-genetic diagnosis.
IVF with Pre-Genetic Diagnosis
IVF with pre-genetic diagnosis is a fertility treatment that combines in vitro fertilisation with genetic testing of embryos. The process involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, which are then collected and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. After fertilisation, the embryos are screened Neurofibromatosis.
Embarking on the IVF journey was an emotional rollercoaster. The hope of having a child and the fear of passing on Neurofibromatosis created a mixture of anticipation and anxiety. It was important to find support from loved ones and medical professionals to navigate through the ups and downs of the process.
During the pre-genetic diagnosis phase, i received the news that some of the embryos tested positive for Neurofibromatosis. This was an incredibly difficult moment for me, as I had to say goodbye to embryos, as they don’t allow you to implant affected embryos. I was thankful that I had three clear of neurofibromatosis and had to stay positive one of these would result in a positive birth
Finding Strength in Support
During this challenging period, the support of my family, and friends played a crucial role. Having loved ones who understood the intricacies of my condition and the emotional toll of the IVF process helped me stay strong. It is essential to surround yourself with a support network that genuinely understands and empathises with your unique journey.
The Joy of Success
After one round of IVF, I was blessed with a healthy pregnancy. The journey of living with Neurofibromatosis and going through IVF with pre-genetic diagnosis was not easy, but the reward was worth it. My child brought me immeasurable joy, and seeing hum grow healthy and happy has made it all worthwhile.
Living with Neurofibromatosis and going through IVF with pre-genetic diagnosis has been a life-altering experience for me. The journey presented numerous challenges, but also moments of hope, support, and ultimately, the greatest joy of all: becoming a parent. If you are facing similar circumstances, remember that you are not alone. Seek support, stay strong, and never lose sight of the possibility of your dreams coming true
