June marked a significant milestone in my baby’s life: his very first haircut. As any parent knows, these “firsts” are both thrilling and a bit nerve-wracking. This one, in particular, held a special place in my heart because it was my best ex neighbour who gained the scissors.
The lead-up to the haircut was filled with anticipation and a hint of apprehension. Would he sit still? Would he cry? How would he look afterward? My best neighbour, who has been there through thick and thin, – she was the one who gifted me all her son baby items such as a pram, rocking horse etc… assured me everything would be fine. Armed with patience, biscuits, my phone and Yvonne skill, she was ready for the task at hand.
As we settled my little one onto my knee and Grandma opposite, the initial curiosity on his face quickly turned into a mix of confusion and discomfort. The snipping sound of the scissors was unfamiliar, and he made it known that he wasn’t pleased. There were a few tears and a lot of wiggling, but my friend remained calm and gentle, taking her time to make sure he was as comfortable as possible.
The transformation was insane. My baby, who just moments ago seemed so little, now looked like a grown-up toddler. It’s amazing how a simple haircut can change their appearance so drastically. His new look brought a mix of emotions—pride at seeing him grow up, nostalgia for his baby days, and a touch of sadness at how quickly time flies.
Despite the initial fuss, the end result was worth it. He looked absolutely adorable with his new hairstyle, and though he might not have enjoyed the process, he soon forgot all about it and was back to his cheerful self.
Having Yvonne be the one to give him his first haircut made the experience even more special. It’s a memory I’ll treasure forever, not just for the milestone itself, but for the love and care that surrounded it. Here’s to many more firsts, and to the wonderful people who make these moments even more meaningful.
